Neighborhood Revitalization

Neighborhood Revitalization (NR) is a tool that allows San Diego Habitat for Humanity to serve  many more hardworking families. Many of Habitat's new construction sites are nestled into older neighborhoods that are in need of some attention and care.  NR efforts focus on the improvement of entire communities around new Habitat construction sites, and supporting families who already own their homes. Habitat has implemented major multi-year NR efforts in the communities of Escondido and Imperial Beach, and will continue to work in neighborhoods where it builds new houses.  The newest community we will be working in is the Logan Heights neighborhood in southeastern San Diego; we are breaking ground before the end of 2016 on 11 new homes.

The NR program is inclusive and provides a holistic approach, encouraging existing residents of a neighborhood to be active participants in the revitalization of their own community.  As part of Neighborhood Revitalization, Habitat partners with other community-based organizations to help neighborhoods become stronger, more vibrant places to live.  Together, we are not only addressing many complex housing challenges, we are changing the way we all think about housing and how to improve it for as many families as we can.

An array of housing solutions are offered through NR.  Home repairs, weatherization, home preservation, and even wraparound family support services such as financial education referrals and home maintenance classes are all provided as a way to build stronger communities.

The goal of NR is to build a legacy - block by block - not just for one family at a time, but for an entire community.
