New Construction

The San Diego Habitat for Humanity  traditional building model is to build new homes for hardworking, low-income families and individuals in need.

The overwhelming need for housing in San Diego County has provided Habitat with a unique opportunity to change lives in our neighborhoods. Southern California ranks as one of the least affordable housing areas in the U.S. and yet Habitat for Humanity is one of the few – if not only – affordable homeownership programs that serves families and individuals earning 30-80% of the median area income. Cost burden and overcrowding are the most serious problems experienced by low-income area residents. Working with volunteers, families and individuals, corporations, congregations and donors we are able to tackle this important housing issue throughout San Diego County.

Through a collaborative effort, Habitat works towards increasing the affordable housing stock in our community by building new homes wherever land is available - either by outright donation or at very discounted prices. These homes are then sold to qualifying partner homeowners without profit and financed with affordable, zero interest loans.  The homeowners’ monthly mortgage payments are used to build additional Habitat for Humanity homes.

In order to build these homes, Habitat utilizes approximately 5,000 volunteers each year.  Anyone who is willing to lend their time and energy can help build a home.  When a volunteer works side by side with a future homeowner, they learn the true story of the need for affordable housing and of the strength and perseverance of their neighbors.  They learn that it is easy to change lives by spending some time in the sunshine, learning new skills and making new friends.

By using mostly volunteer labor, Habitat saves on expensive labor costs.  By partnering with local builders and contractors to secure donations of building materials, Habitat saves on the ever increasing costs of supplies.  Through the efforts of our generous sponsors and volunteers, we pass a significant savings on to the homeowners.
