The Rehab Program - Turning Blight into Bright
In an effort to help alleviate blight in our communities, San Diego Habitat’s rehab program, active since 2010, takes existing homes and rehabs them for purchase by low-income families, and has increased the number of needy families Habitat is able to serve.
How it Works
San Diego Habitat locates and researches existing properties for sale. A full property profile is presented to our Board of Directors who makes the final decision on whether to purchase the property. Often, grants from local governments help to purchase these properties.
Once Habitat gains ownership, rehab work is begun with the help of volunteers and in-kind material donations. Upon completion, the home is listed for sale - Habitat is required to sell to buyers who earn at or below 80% of the San Diego Area Median Income, or about $64,500 for a family of four. Habitat also provides down payment assistance for qualified buyers through a grant from the State of California.
After the rehab home is sold, Habitat uses those funds to purchase more homes and the funds keep recycling to create beautiful, upgraded, energy efficient and affordable homes to low and moderate income households!
